The Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM) is a peak organisation of health professionals in Australia and New Zealand who work in HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Their goals include generating knowledge and action in clinical management, research, education, policy and advocacy.
Role of pathology in HIV and STIs
STIs may remain undiagnosed and untreated if symptoms are not recognised, potentially leading to fertility and serious health issues. STIs also facilitate the transmission of HIV. Pathology testing plays an important role in the diagnosis and subsequent treatment of STIs. With increasing prevalence of STIs in Australia, reliance on pathology services will continue to increase in this field.
