Federal parliamentarian for the NSW seat of Blaxland, Hon Jason Clare MP, has visited a pathology laboratory before, but his recent visit to Kossard Dermatopathologists, a laboratory specialising in skin conditions, had deeper meaning following his own surgery for melanoma earlier this year.

In October, Mr Clare urged Australians to get their skin checked after he became suspicious of a mole on his leg that pathology testing confirmed was malignant.

Unlike most patients, he got the chance to meet his pathologist and see his own sample under the microscope, to learn how melanoma was detected for him and the 15,000 other Australians diagnosed with the cancer each year.

Channel 9 reporter Gabriella Rogers came along to the lab to meet Dr Peter Bullpitt and the rest of the team behind the diagnosis.
